The Grand Cabal Battle 2

So I managed to squeeze in another game!  I might get another one in before I am off the grid altogether for 6-9 months…in a country that is not the US.  So yeah.  However, I think that I will get a game in when the new Traitors Hate comes out which will amplify the power of this new list to amazing levels.

 

Well, here was my list for this 2,000 point game against Vanilla Marines:

So I didn’t get invisibility, the +1 invuln from Sanctic, the 4+ FNP, or Gate.  So not an auspicious start.  He was running 2 squads of Sternguard vets, a lot of heavy bolters (He was using Imperial Fists so this was bad…), a vindi, whirlwind, sniper scouts, and a LOT of infantry.

Long story short, it was a killpoint game that I ended up winning 13-8 almost tabling him.  The Herald of Tzeentch brought a serious amount of firepower to the game.  He would move in, fire off his shooting attacks, then turbo-boost away.  All of the psychers died which is where 6 of the 8 killpoints he got came from.  The rest came from the predator and the vindicator.  Few things learned-

1- Paradox is AWESOME.  If you have a WC 3 and you commit 5 dice to it, it is 100% guaranteed.  Which is nice to have at least one guaranteed power per turn.

2- Vortex is hilariously good.  I mean, really.  It’s silly how destructive this is.  I am debating buying an aquilla strongpoint just to get the vortex missile launchers just for it.  Also, the complete inability to prepare for where it may move is again just simply hilarious.  Watching it scatter 11″ right on top of his command squad and watching them all get sucked in was simply priceless.

3- Plague drones are nasty, but they also are really good bullet sinks.

4- Terrify reduces Ld by 1.  Which is a good setup to psychic shriek.  This combination was ridiculously effective.  It’s only one, but that seemed to be the key to success.

5- Anti-air continues to be a pain in the rear.  He did have a Storm Talon.  Took it out because he needed an extra shot last turn and dropped to hover, only to be mauled by the screamers.

6- Screamers are great ablative wounds and they are pretty nifty tank hunters.  Awesome tank hunters they are not though and I will not be trying these guys against any superheavies anytime soon.

 

Well, thanks for reading and I will be posting the 6 unique biker sorcerers before long.  They are all sculpted with only a few details left to do and I hope to have at least 3 of them painted before I leave, though that 3 could turn to 0…because really, time flies when it is limited.

Games at the old stomping ground

Hey all,

I had the opportunity to run a few games at the old store, Crossroad Games in Standish Maine.  Great store and great group of people.  Played two 1500 point games against some friends and, while both were losses, I had a good time.  I ran the same list both times (Straight CSM, nominally ran as a Lorgar’s Knights, an offshoot of Word Bearers that still hold true to their core loyalties to Lorgar and to the old chapter):

It’s not my forte, running heavy shooting armies with psykers.  My bread and butter is really the line of death that chops the enemy into little cubes, but that often requires monsters and a lot more models.  Thus, I decided to go with a smaller more elite shooting army.

Game 1- (Eldar)

He ran a foot-dar list that was well played all the way around.  No cheese, just a LOT of bullets.  3 x dire avenger squads, a warp spider squad, a swooping hawks squad, 2 x guardian jetbike squads, a farseer, and an avatar.

We ran the maelstrom mission where you could steal each other’s objective cards.  I actually ran this same mission both games.

It started off pretty well with me tearing up his warp spiders with my auto-cannons and a few dire avengers.  However, his ability to move, run, then shoot meant that my pre-measurements were moot as I did not factor this in when deploying.  My forces were pretty heavily spread out and he pushed and took out the rhino the TS were in turn 2.  Turn 3 saw him deploying his shining spears (forgot about them) and crushing the last of my autocannons.  The game was effectively over by turn 4.  I had killed a fair amount of his list with most of a jetbike squad dead, all of the dire avenger squads pretty beat up or completely gone and the warp spiders down to only one or two.  The Shining spears had lost a combat against the warpsmith and sorcerer (due to some pretty awful rolls on his part with his exarch) and I had failed to sweep them, leaving one running around.  Turn 4 it ended with me being tabled except for 2 CSMs running away.

All in all, a close game until that last turn.  I was only about 2 points behind until he scored I think 4 or 5 points that last turn to my none.  A good game and I think a better deployment on my part could have turned the tide.

Game 2- (Dark Angels)

He ran a demi-compan031y and a bunch of bikes and Samaels speeder.  Here is his army:

He didn’t have any psykers and I can’t remember what his warlord power was.

030This was my army.  The guys with the shields are the thousand sons (wanted a less magical reason for the 4++).  I rolled the preferred enemy (Space Marine) within 12″ of my warlord (the sorcerer).  My powers were –

Sorcerer- Psychic Shriek, Fearless (Not what it’s called), Firestorm of Tzeentch, and Boon of Mutation

Aspiring Champion – Firestorm of Tzeentch, Doombolt

I deployed pretty condensed.  He had quite a few outflanking units and I wanted to brace fo032r the impact of all that outflanking/deepstriking stuff.  Everything was at the very back to prevent turn 1 melta kill on my contemptor.  He got turn one.  Deepstruck his meltagun pod…and, well this happened:

He rolled the option for me to put anywhere and I stuck them mid field.  They were not long for this world upon arrival.  He moved forward with lots of his stuff and quickly closed the gap.

037The second turn saw the plasma pod arrival which destroyed the contemptor, as well as everything but the regular speeder and this was a rough turn for me.  I had crackedopen his command rhino but had very little headway against the bikes on the left.  The bikes on the right arrived and destroyed the pred which was angled poorly (intentionally to get all 3 las shots) but it exposed my rear to plasma shots.  Turn two for me saw me destroying a rhino, the 3 ravenwing knights on my right, and most of the tacticals in the pod.

Things rapidly devolved into madness as he got into assault.  Luckily, my TS command squad was there.  Every game these guys impress me.  With AP 3 bolters, 4++ saves, and a free force weapon on the champion, my TS are always MVPs in games.  Even if it is as a bullet sink, they earn their keep.  He assaults in with his command squad and last 2 bikers and polish off the CSM, only to be counter charged by the TS, Sorcerer and Warpsmith.  Chainswords and poweraxes clashed, resulting in three gruesome rounds of combat that swung my direction when he flopped his company champion’s attacks.  Preferred enemy was a blessing this game.  Lots of 1’s were rerolled.  I mean, a LOT.  However, on the far side of the table, my CSMs were making headway by sticking Krak grenades to Samaels’s speeder…039

It took two rounds to bring it down, but they did.  However, this maneuver cost them the ability to do anything else all game.  They made their points back between the speeder and the three bikes, but the game ended with them hustling across the table trying to make a difference.

However, the game got interesting as the warpsmith cleaved the biker SGT down and was smiled upon by the dark gods…  041(Before)

After the daemon prince had arrived, I had ground superiority and it was then a race against time.  My sorcerer and aspiring champ parted ways to race to objectives while the daemon prince destroyed the last two bikes and ran towards the last squad of enemy to try to claim linebreaker

045The game ended as a very close loss.  I had 16 to his 18.  He had a squad of assault marines left and a pod not destroyed while I had 8 or 9 plasma CSM in the rear, a daemon prince, a sorcerer, and an aspiring champion.  Linebreaker and slay the warlord had brought me close, and this being the end of the 7th meant that there was no chance at getting an extra turn to knock out some extra objectives.  His mobility and ability to grab backfield objectives had proved sufficient to take the game, but boy oh boy, what a blood bath.  While the dark angels took the field, they definitely had lots of extra bunk space going back home (So did my CSM…but hey, we have a daemon prince now.  That’s cool, right?).

Hobby update: Getting used to my air brush and making headway with my renegades and daemon kin

So making some painting progress.  I have been whittling away slowly at models I need to paint for the past month or so but very slowly.  Recently I have started making more progress faster, especially making gains with my air brush.  So, onto the stuff.

I recently finished my renegade command squad.  Or at least a possible command squad.  The flamed and melts cannot both be used but they can be swapped out.  The rest of the renegades will be green and purple with the disciples being red.  Sets them apart I feel.  However, veterans will be black or something separate.  The lack of unity in color scheme makes them feel more patchwork and more like a renegade army.

So here are the first five finished disciples (still figuring out how to base them):

Here is the Arch-Demagogue.  I like the dual close combat weapon look with a power weapon and a regular close combat weapon.

Note the skull pad.  I quite like this method of painting bone.

Here is the new scheme for my warp talons.  Right now I field eight of them (7 previously painted green, one red).   Daemon kin formations finally give me a good excuse to use these guys.  That said, they have proven pretty good in the two games I have run them with daemon kin.

Here is my GW thirster.  I painted a lot of him before I became discouraged and now I need to go back and polish off the last detail work on him.  Oh, and his base.  But I am trying to think of what his base is.  He is either a daemon prince of Khorne or a lesser thirster (my big ones are the 275-300 point varieties).

Currently, before the thirster I am working on my Skull Cannon of Khorne.  This is the first time I have done a fair amount of blending with my airbrush.  The yellow bloodletters will be darkened through successive layers to look like they have sort of a lava finish.  The back two will be more of a classic red bloodletter scheme.

Once this is done, which hopefully will be this weekend I will finish the details on the thirster and eagerly dive into my Stormfiends who are my renegade brutes (Picture Ogryns but chaosy).  They fit the bill of a brute and they are the size one expects of a very bulky three wound model.

Obliterators, Vindicator Shield, Possessed, and More! (Pictures in progress)

So, it’s been a while since I got a good hobby update in.  So, since my last set of pics, I have made some good progress.  First, the painting.  I finished my Predator.  I airbrushed the base, wash, and highlights.  The wash was rough, but worked fine.  I really need to work on my freehand writing though.  I think I may get a caligraphy pen and work with that for fine writing on models as black ink will work well.  If anyone has tips on stylish freehand writing, let me know.

Bonus points for anyone who gets the Chi-Rho and the term “Under this Sign” Statement.  Fitting, as I play Word Bearers.  The guy on top reminds me of the meme “Drive closer, I want to stab him with my sword!”.  Overall, I like it.  I matches my style and the paint job is solid.  May go back and highlight those black areas with the same scorching streaks that adorn the infantry.

The other four still need their scorching streaks on their black armor, but I really like them.  The combination of all the different colors and textures made them fun and challenging to paint.  They served as an opportunity to practice blades, metal, skin, eyes, teeth, horns, hooves, power armor, wings, claws…yeah, pretty much everything I paint.  I have 4 more to paint and that will finish my possessed squad.

I continued working on the vindicator shield, though making only a little progress.

I have the basics for bits and now I am going to start cleaning it up and blending.  Basically, adding the initial layer, another layer of bits, one more structural layer, then finishing details.

I also have started a project of revamping my terminators.  I wanted something more chaos-ish.  I plan to get the horus heresy terminators for REGULAR (ie-non-aligned terminators).  HOWEVER, I wanted these guys for my chaos lords retinue…this guy:

So, I didn’t want to do tentacles.  I wanted something else.  Partly because while this guy turned out REALLY well, he was a) a royal pain in the ass, b)used a metric ton of bits and GS, and c) there was no way to keep him on a 40mm base and not look awkward.  Now, I am perfectly fine making my bases bigger for very small squads (oblits), characters (my lord or thirster) but for terminators I wanted them smaller and obviously subordinate to this guy.  So yeah, I came up with this idea:

Yeah, so he is attached to a goblin spider rear.  I used a possessed head, though I am not sold (it’s just on a ball of GS as a mount).  But I really like how it came out.  It still needs some GS work (the bottom of it is hollowed, the joining area and the leg bases, plus the areas around the underarms).  But yeah, this is something that I think when the lord and retinue are on the table, they will draw a good bit of attention.

Lastly, my second oblit is ready for GS.  I wanted a dynamic pose on this guy, so I came up with this.  He is the exact same size as the other one (so much larger than a normal terminator) but he is more reared up in a striking pose so looks taller.  Excited to get this guy done and then one more.  It’s the kind of squad that people really like seeing on the table.

He still has to get some more bits after the GS work, but most of the primary bits are done.  GS work will be daemonic flesh, cabling, skulls, and the joints of the legs.  This guy has less complicated legs than the other one and thus will take more effort in the post-production phase.

Updates and a Question!

Hello all…

So, first, the question.  THIS, is MY painting sheet (not really a pallet, it’s just what I scrape/brush excess paint off on to).  IMGP0052

So….I think you can see the dominant colors.  Would love to see other’s.  I know some people, like the author of Thin Your Paint that probably has his in like straight lines.

Onto more blog-ish stuff…

Still have to do the black edging and highlighting, details, and then going back around and cleaning up.  I am struggling with the horns though.  If anyone has a solid “how to” on horns, would love to see it.  Managed a little progress with the Obliterator

And I continued working on my Vindicator shield.  My vindicator I hope to be a culmination of my painting and sculpting skill.  It is a possessed vindicator and I am trying to make it look the look.

The spots are where various daemon arms, heads, and torsos will be sticking out.  They will have bits of GS to look like they are being held back/ breaking through.

My list that I am working on still has some work to be done to be 100% for an 1850 list (plus a LOT of GS bases).  I have to finish converting and then paint one more oblit, finish about 5 more CSM, finish the Vindi, the Pred, 3 more Rhinos, and a total of 9 Possessed (of which 1 is 100%, 4 more are the ones above, and 4 more after that are straight black).  However, I already have painted 20 CSM, 9 Thousand Sons, Dark Apostle, Chaos lord, and a Rhino.  A lot of the models already have quite a bit of work on them as well.  Well, gonna keep pluggin’ away over the next week and I’ll update next weekend.

The havoc launcher gets a seperate slot. This leaves room for a combi-bolter, combi-melta, AND a havoc launcher. Chaos Rhinos actually CAN be equipped with up to 4 weapons- 2 x combi-bolters, combi-melta, and havoc launcher.

Well, I historically HATE painting vehicles.  However, rolling up my sleeves, I started to tackle my vehicular backlog.  I started with a rhino, which I converted to look unique.  This is the first of 4.  The hardest part was figuring out HOW to get the scheme I wanted down.  The next four should be much easier and quicker.  024

Tournament at FTW Games!

Just went to an 1850 pt tourney at FTW games.  Ran a list that was using what I had at my availability, though it was built with tactical objectives in mind…though we did not use them,  My list was-

Huron

Terminator Sorcerer, ML3 w/ spell familiar and combi-melta, MoN

10 TS w/ Rhino, Havoc Launcher

3 Mutliators, MoN

11CSM w/ 2 Melta, PF and Melta Bombs, MoN

11 CSM w/ 2 Plasma, MoN

Vindi, Shield, Daemonic Possession

5 Havocs, w/ 4 AC

Lots of infantry, not many vehicles.  I ran across the problem that I only packed one damned rhino!  I also had NO idea what the regular crowd was going to be bringing.

Game 1 I played against a Mechdar force with allied in Knight titan.  Imperial Knight+Wraithknight+him seizing+BONEHEAD deployment decision=humiliating defeat.  Was tabled turn 5, managed to drop titan.  My dice rolls were pretty horrendous, but really the biggest thing is that I forgot that Huron had a S6 armor bane weapon.  When I remembered and closed in with him, I finished it off.  Had I done this early, the game may have gone differently.

Game 2 I played a Tau player.  It was a KP mission and he eked out a win on the tertiary objective with us tying for all others.  The oblits ruled the day here as they claimed nearly 7 alone.  Well fought, especially because the mission rewarded him +2 to start because I had no FA.  Overall, a bloodbath.  He ran a dual riptide list with a Farsight enclave primary force with allied tau, 4 tetras, missile riptides, and a metric ton of fusion blasters.

Game 3 I played against 1850 points of guard.  An AMAZING army, all metal old Praetorians.  A HUGE amount of infantry, the game was relic and hammer and anvil…ie- NOT GOOD FOR A FOOTSLOGGING ARMY!  The oblits outflanked very late and hit one blob with heavy flamers, then twin-linked flamers…then failed a 2″ charge through difficult terrain.  We pounded the crap out of each other, probably killing 50 guardsmen, but to no avail and the game ended in a loss with him taking a win because of the tertiary (killing the most psykers)…because my psyker perils of the warped himself to death…so basically, I literally gave him the win.   Other than that, he would have tied exactly.  He had first blood, I had linebreaker.

I apologize for the crappy quality of the pics.  It was an amazing army.  But overall, I had a blast.  They are a really fun group, and I look forward to hopefully getting to go this Wednesday.  Overall, the store is amazing, the group is fun and very open to new players, and the skill level goes from beginner/novice to veteran/ATC champions.  Hope to cover the store on a separate entry with some of the amazing staff there.  They are knowledgeable and openly offer advice on lists and how to build and shape a better one without just simply saying a list should be scrapped for a netlist/cheese list.  If you are in VA, it’s a must to visit for 40k players!
