So, I don’t have my copy yet, having ordered it from GW. But after looking at full rulesets online, I would like to discuss the cool things and the not-so-cool things.
Let’s start with the mother of not-so-cool things: Bloodthirsters. Their complete lack of upgrades makes them much less potent of a force. HOWEVER, you can field…well, a LOT of them. PER slaughtercult you can field 3 (1 in the slaughtercult and 2 for the lord of slaughter option). So, given the points you can make a devastating list. But really…no upgrades? Not one?
Lack of oblits and mutilators: These guys belong in this codex. I mean, they have hellbrutes, they have possessed, they even have vanilla CSM and cultists. But not these guys. Just disappointed.
Gifts: The loss of gifts in general sort of sucks. Rolling was annoying, but it was nice to be able to plop an AP2 weapon in a squad with the character for 10 points. Overall, I like the direction they are headed and I foresee daemons following the same pattern with their next book because, well…daemons need a new book to make them less exploitable.
Oh…and crushers are still stupid expensive and garbage…and to make it worse, when a new book comes out this book won’t get better 😦
Also, chaos champions and characters lost a LOT of options. No more options for terminator champions, few for CSM and Zerker champs. It looks like customization is pretty much gone.
Now the cool stuff!!!!
FEARLESS!!! RARGH! Yep, daemons are fearless again. Now, my bloodletters that lose…oh well.
Mixing! : Now I can slap my locis into squads of CSM. So since they already have rage from MoK, I can slap hatred in there…so 5 possessed on the charge will have 2 base+2 rage with hatred at S6. That’s 20 S6 attacks with rerolls!
HUGE VERSATILITY! You can make your list however you want. With 1 slaughtercult, you can then take 16 units of small bikers. 16 MSU biker squads with melta, plasma, and flamer. What was that about knight and wave serpent spam you say?
Multiple lords of war: You can take a battle forged army and take 2 Lord of Skulls at 2000 points. Just wow. Yeah, may get one of these guys because now that I have seen the rules they are just NASTY. Don’t look to bad with the helmeted option either. Wish the brass scorpion was in there, but oh well.
Not over the top! This sounds like a not cool thing, but I love playing the army that not many people play. This book is going to attract very few who don’t already play fluffy lists. It is exploitable, but it forces you to buy units like possessed, crushers, cultists, and warpfiends to REALLY be exploitable.
Bloodthirsters EVERYWHERE! 1 unit of slaughtercult, 1 lord of slaughter, 1 hellbrute. That means, you can get 3 thirsters for getting 2 MSU squads of bloodletters (160 pts total), a hellbrute (100 points), and 5 possessed (150 points). Yeah, that’s 410 points, Then you get ANOTHER 3 THIRSTERS! You would need to run a MASSIVE army, but still, freaking awesome!
Walkers…and more walkers…and more walkers. Thor over at Creative Twilight should like this one. Run one slaughtercult and then you can take 8 walkers. Run 2 and run 16. You get the idea.
It’s made to run literally dozens of small units to rack up that blood tithe. Just can’t wait.
Overall, I am extraordinarily thrilled! This army will make even losing fun with all the shenenigans from the blood tithe. However, I just hope it doesn’t get exploited somehow and become the new “it” army, though those I play will know I have played mono-khorne for years before this. However, this has made me realize I need bikers, like badly. A bunch of them. This army will need a way to zip around and harass the enemy. I also like the fact that I can take a rhino as a unit. A fast attack unit. Then…stuff bloodletters into it if I wish.
Well, can’t wait to get my copy. Gonna put together a preliminary list! Gotta go buy stuff.
Thanks for reading,
So, it’s been a while since I got a good hobby update in. So, since my last set of pics, I have made some good progress. First, the painting. I finished my Predator. I airbrushed the base, wash, and highlights. The wash was rough, but worked fine. I really need to work on my freehand writing though. I think I may get a caligraphy pen and work with that for fine writing on models as black ink will work well. If anyone has tips on stylish freehand writing, let me know.
Bonus points for anyone who gets the Chi-Rho and the term “Under this Sign” Statement. Fitting, as I play Word Bearers. The guy on top reminds me of the meme “Drive closer, I want to stab him with my sword!”. Overall, I like it. I matches my style and the paint job is solid. May go back and highlight those black areas with the same scorching streaks that adorn the infantry.
Now, here are the last of the possessed.
The other four still need their scorching streaks on their black armor, but I really like them. The combination of all the different colors and textures made them fun and challenging to paint. They served as an opportunity to practice blades, metal, skin, eyes, teeth, horns, hooves, power armor, wings, claws…yeah, pretty much everything I paint. I have 4 more to paint and that will finish my possessed squad.
I continued working on the vindicator shield, though making only a little progress.
I have the basics for bits and now I am going to start cleaning it up and blending. Basically, adding the initial layer, another layer of bits, one more structural layer, then finishing details.
I also have started a project of revamping my terminators. I wanted something more chaos-ish. I plan to get the horus heresy terminators for REGULAR (ie-non-aligned terminators). HOWEVER, I wanted these guys for my chaos lords retinue…this guy:
So, I didn’t want to do tentacles. I wanted something else. Partly because while this guy turned out REALLY well, he was a) a royal pain in the ass, b)used a metric ton of bits and GS, and c) there was no way to keep him on a 40mm base and not look awkward. Now, I am perfectly fine making my bases bigger for very small squads (oblits), characters (my lord or thirster) but for terminators I wanted them smaller and obviously subordinate to this guy. So yeah, I came up with this idea:
Yeah, so he is attached to a goblin spider rear. I used a possessed head, though I am not sold (it’s just on a ball of GS as a mount). But I really like how it came out. It still needs some GS work (the bottom of it is hollowed, the joining area and the leg bases, plus the areas around the underarms). But yeah, this is something that I think when the lord and retinue are on the table, they will draw a good bit of attention.
Lastly, my second oblit is ready for GS. I wanted a dynamic pose on this guy, so I came up with this. He is the exact same size as the other one (so much larger than a normal terminator) but he is more reared up in a striking pose so looks taller. Excited to get this guy done and then one more. It’s the kind of squad that people really like seeing on the table.
He still has to get some more bits after the GS work, but most of the primary bits are done. GS work will be daemonic flesh, cabling, skulls, and the joints of the legs. This guy has less complicated legs than the other one and thus will take more effort in the post-production phase.
Hey, would love comments and suggestions!
Thanks for reading!,
So, after adding Isopropyl to the mix, things are going a bit smoother. However, it sucks down a LOT of paint. SO, on that note I ordered a base color kit from Vallejo model air. Lots of good reviews, and with it I can start doing basing. From there I will start to expand upon my airbrush paint collection, but I never really see myself becoming an “air only” kinda guy. It lacks the finesse and connection with a model I love to have. However, with those colors coming in, they will allow me to start cranking away at my rat-rebels and get an army that is field ready. Not as impressive as the grot guard that can be seen over at creative twilight, I feel it will look impressive nonetheless. Excited as I still have some models to build to include Skaven StormVermin which will act as my Ogryn Brutes. These guys are actually bigger than I figured and they really fit the bill for the intent. The squad will be close to 400 points though, so not sure how I will deploy it…perhaps in a chimera? I hope to get a pack of night runners to get fully posable models for a squad of oddly armed specialists.
I also picked up some more GS and have made a little more progress on the vindicator. I hope to get pictures up this weekend of a radically altered vindicator shield as well as a finished predator and a second obliterator (which would make 2 of 3 for mini-defilers).
Well, thanks for reading,
